ALONE IN THE OUTSIDE OFFICE, Shannon wondered why she was still sitting there when all she had to do was get up and leave. She stood and looked around, thinking she would do just that, when a framed photo on the wall caught her attention.
She walked over to it. It looked as if it had been taken at some company get-together. Calebâs smiling face was the first she noticed. Flashing his dimple, he looked happy and cocky and totally full of himself. The captain was there, also smiling, as were the two men whoâd just walked in.
She turned her attention to the remaining figure in the photograph. He was taller than the other four, and whipcord lean, an arresting figure. His dark-blond hair was wavy and a little long. He probably had a hard time keeping it out of his sky-blue eyes.
As her gaze returned to Caleb, she compared the two and decided they were like night and day.
âThe one in the yellow shirt is Brandon Everly, my partner.â
Shannon started at the sound of Calebâs voice. She glanced at him, then back at the face of his friend. This Brandon seemed so full of life. Maybe it was the grin, she thought. With a grin like that, he was sure to have the ladies falling at his feet. It was hard to imagine him lying in a hospital bed, felled by a bullet.
She looked back at Caleb. âWill he be okay?â
He shrugged, but there was nothing casual about it. âHeâs in a coma. The doctors canât be sure of anything until he wakes up.â
She touched his arm. âIâm sorry.â
He gazed down at her. Her eyes met his, saw the barely banked flames of desire and felt her breath catch at the intensity of her bodyâs reaction to that heat.
âCome home with me, Shannon.â
She shook her head. âI canât.â
He grasped her hands. âYou can. We have things to talk about. I have things to tell you. Thereâs no privacy here.â
She thought of pulling her hands from his, but found she had no desire to end the connection. âI really donât think thatâs a good idea. Maybe we could go have a cup of coffee somewhere.â It flashed into her mind that caffeine wasnât good for pregnant women. Shannon swung away from him, fearful he might read her secret in her eyes.
Caleb put his hands on her shoulders and leaned close to her ear. âI donât want coffee.â
I want you.
The words remained unspoken, but Shannon didnât need to hear them. She knew. âCaleb, I canâtâ¦we canâtâ¦â She turned around, intent on convincing him that the two of them together would never work. But the minute she looked into his eyes, she couldnât remember even one of the hundred reasons sheâd come up with.
âCome home with me, Shannon.â
It was both a plea and a command. And simply irresistible. In her eyes he was no longer a cop. He was the man whoâd made love to her. The man who was the father of the tiny being she carried beneath her heart.
